Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
Go to your Dashboard and click "Add a Cat". You'll be asked for your cat's name, age, weight, breed, activity level, and any health conditions. This information is used to calculate their exact calorie needs.
At minimum you need your cat's weight and approximate age. Breed, activity level, and health conditions are optional but improve recommendation accuracy.
Yes — you can add as many cats as you like. Each cat gets their own calorie target and food recommendations based on their individual profile.
Calorie Calculations
MealMeow uses the standard veterinary formula: RER = 70 × (weight in kg)^0.75, then multiplies by a life-stage factor (2.5× for kittens, 1.2–1.4× for adult cats, 0.8× for weight loss). This is the same method used by veterinary nutritionists.
Calorie needs vary by individual. The calculated target is a starting point — monitor your cat's weight over 2–4 weeks and adjust portions up or down by ~10% as needed. Always consult your vet if you have concerns.
RER (Resting Energy Requirement) is the base calories needed at rest. DER (Daily Energy Requirement) multiplies RER by a factor based on your cat's life stage and activity level to account for daily movement and growth.
Food Recommendations
Each food receives three weighted scores: Nutrition (35%) based on protein, fat, and moisture; Value (30%) for cost-per-calorie efficiency; and Suitability (35%) adjusted for your cat's age, health conditions, and life stage.
You can submit a food via the "Submit a Food" page. Our team reviews submissions and adds approved foods to the database. You can track your submission status under "My Submissions".
The Suitability score (35% of total) adjusts based on your cat's specific profile. A food great for a healthy adult may score lower for a cat with kidney disease because the protein level is too high for that condition.

AI Chat
The AI can answer questions about your cat's diet, compare foods, explain nutritional concepts, help build meal plans, and interpret food labels. It has context about your cats' profiles and saved plans.
The AI is powered by Claude and is generally reliable for cat nutrition topics, but it can make mistakes. Always verify important dietary decisions with your veterinarian, especially for cats with health conditions.
